What Are Dental Implants?

Posted .

In recent years, the dental world has seen a rise in the popularity of dental implants. Here at Louisiana Dental Center in Covington, Louisiana, our team has seen the same thing.

But what’s interesting is that, even with the rise in use of dental implants, few people know exactly what they are, why you may need them, and what the process of getting an implant is like. It’s actually a straightforward process, but we want to make sure that our patients are educated on all aspects of the treatments we offer. So take a moment to kick back and learn more about one of the more popular treatments in dentistry.

What are they?
At their simplest, dental implants are exactly what they sound like. They’re fake teeth implanted into your gums. They’re a lot like dentures that just never come out, and don’t need constant refitting and adjustment.

Why would I need them?
Most people who need dental implants have had some serious tooth damage at some point. Whether it was accidental, or resulted from tooth decay or gum disease, they’re likely using implants to replace lost or dead teeth.

In some cases, they can be used to replace teeth where a crown may have accomplished the same thing. The final decision to use an implant is between you and Dr. Roy Cantrelle, D.D.S., Michael J. Cason, D.D.S., Jose Figueroa, D.M.D., Joseph R. Lacoste Jr., D.D.S., Ashley Lestrade, D.D.S., Kimberly Luminais, D.D.S., Joseph Marino, D.D.S., Ryan Matherne, D.D.S., Anthony Pham, D.D.S., Jeffrey Snitzer, D.M.D, Hillary Wright, D.D.S., Justin Wu, D.D.S.

What’s the process like?
Implants are really easy to install. They’re just a titanium post, inserted directly into your gums where your old tooth was. Then, that post is capped with a crown, completing the look of a real tooth.
